Local NGOs and the youth of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are targeted in the campaign initiated and financed by the Amadeu Antonio Foundation: ‘Kein Ort für Neonazis’ (No place for neo-Nazis). They shall be won in favour of democratic culture and for preventing the re-entry of the NPD (the far-right National Democratic Party of Germany) into the State Parliament. The aim of the campaign is to permanently hinder the establishment of neo-Nazi scenes in the federal states as part of a large-scale joint effort of all democratic forces. In order to succeed the nationwide support of all the democratic parties and organisations is essential. Through this campaign the Amadeu Antonio Foundation offers fast and unbureaucratic funding for smaller initiatives as well as public acknowledgment of their efforts.
Being active against right-wing violence and showing civil courage is always meaningful. But in the time of elections it is essential to demonstrate presence in order to hinder the legitimisation of neo-Nazism. The entry of the NPD in the State Parliament might lead to the public approval of racism and anti-Semitism.
A Democratic Counterculture
Through public discussions and various other events the initiatives, which are supported by the Amadeu Antonio Foundation, can inform the public about what is actually behind the statements of the NPD and what their ideology is really about. Furthermore these events, festivals, film screenings, and theatre plays can serve as meaningful alternatives to the programs organised by the neo-Nazis. At their own events, neo-Nazis often persuade participants about their ideology and convince them to vote for their party. In order to prevent the spreading of racist, anti-Semitic, and discriminative ideologies, and to hinder the familiarisation of these in the public, action should be taken locally.
