Gender and the Prevention of Right-wing Extremism

© Recherche Nord

A topic that has not received the attention it deserves is the gender dimension of right wing extremism, and the pertinence of gender in preventive work against neo-Nazism. What motivates young women and men to join the neo-Nazi scene and how is that connected to traditional gender expectations? What is the role of women in the neo-Nazi scene?

In the North East of Germany, in the rural region around Ludwigslust, Amadeu Antonio Foundation explores these questions and possible responses in the project "Lola für Ludwigslust". A focus of the work is on empowering women and girls as actors for democracy. Activities include briefing members of state parliament on their approach to neo-Nazi women in their parliaments, training of educators to work with children who are being brought up in neo-Nazi families, organizing political salons and supporting local initiatives that challenge gender stereotypes and encourage girls and women to become leaders in pro-democracy work in the region.

During the initial years of "Lola für Lulu”, we identified a need for exchange between scientific knowledge and practice with regard to gender and the prevention of right wing extremism. To respond to this, the "Fachstelle Gender und Rechtsextremismus" (expert centre on gender and right wing extremism) was set up. It provides a space for theory and practice to come together. It fosters dialogue and peer learning among practitioners in the field, contributes to policy debates and advocates for broader awareness with regard to the gender dimension of right wing extremism and the implications for prevention work.
