On 15 March 2019, right-wing extremist terrorists killed 50 people and seriously injured another 48 in New Zealand. Two mosques were attacked, the Al Noor Mosque in Christchurch and a mosque in the suburb of Linwood. At 1.45pm local time, according to eyewitness accounts, the first shots were fired. 300 believers were in the building at that time. Four suspects were arrested, three men and a woman, three of them were said to be directly involved in the crime. Three of them are from New Zealand, the fourth terrorist is from Australia. The fourth terrorist, a 28-year-old man, published a \u201cmanifesto\u201d with the title \u201cThe Great Replacement\u201d before committing the crime. During the terror attack, the man live-streamed the assault, which looks like a first-person shooter video game \u2013the difference being it deals with the actual murder of people. <\/strong><\/p>\n

At least one bomb was disarmed by the police and the suspect\u2019s car, too, is said to have been primed with explosives. Mike Bush, New Zealand Police Commissioner and as such the country\u2019s highest-ranking police official, advised New Zealand\u2019s Muslims on Friday: \u201cI want to ask anyone that was thinking of going to a mosque anywhere in New Zealand today not to go, to close your doors, until you hear from us again.\u201d Roughly 46,000 people, less than one percent of New Zealand\u2019s population, are Muslim.<\/p>\n

The 28-year-old detainee had a \u2013 now deleted \u2013 Twitter account under the name \u201cBrenton Tarrant\u201d. Two days before the crime, he posted photos of weapons with white letters on it on this platform. The same weapons can also be seen in the live-streamed video of the crime. Among others, the \u201cBlack Sun\u201d is depicted, a symbol of National Socialist origin used by neo-Nazis. Additionally, the number 14 is on view repeatedly. 14 is code among extreme right-wingers for the \u201cFourteen Words\u201d coined by US-American neo-Nazi David Lane: \u201cWe must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children.\u201d \u201cBrenton Tarrant\u201d also uses almost this exact wording in his \u201cmanifesto\u201d in answer to the question why he plans to commit the crime. Written next to them are names connected to the Battle of Vienna of 1683, a central reference point of the so-called \u201cNew\u201d Right. In this battle, the German-Polish forces defeated the Ottoman army. Moreover, the word \u201cmigration compact\u201d is also on display: it refers to the UN\u2019s \u201cGlobal Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration\u201d which a right-wing populist and extremist disinformation campaign unsuccessfully attempted to thwart last year.<\/p>\n
