The antisemitic attack in Halle

„Hello, my name is anon, and I think the holocaust never happened“, says Stephan Balliet into a camera before killing two people in Halle on Wednesday. Balliet’s intention was to storm a synagogue and, with the help of homemade weapons and explosives, commit a massacre there on Yom Kippur, the holiest Jewish holiday. Despite being armed, he did not succeed in penetrating the synagogue. He threw his hand grenades over a wall of the Jewish cemetery. Increasingly desperate that his plan to „kill as many Jews“ was failing, he shot a passer-by in the back. She died. Balliet wanted to kill as many Jews as possible because, in his opinion, Jews are to blame for all the evil in the world.

On Wednesday 25th January, Nicholas Potter, journalist and researcher at the Amadeu Antonio Foundation, addressed the Committee on Political Affairs and Democracy of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, France. Among the most prevalent forms of Holocaust denial and distortion in Germany today are the trivialization of the Holocaust, “Holocaust fatigue,” and the issue of “double-genocide,” the equation of Nazi and Communist crimes.
